A few years back I did one of my first ever non residential gigs. I had always seen myself designing homes for people to live in not to work in. It’s not that I cant see enough reasons to design a structures for people to work in. It’s just that over the 20 years of me designing I have always done it with domestic human needs in mind. That is until a good friend of mine John Abrams, asked me to design the new Wickersham Jewelers building. At first I thought it would be difficult until I started to think the way I did when I designed residential homes. Wickersham’s has been around for over a hundred years and has been known as THE jewelry store to go to in Bakersfield so I had to come with my A game.
You have to think with purpose, “What purpose will this room serve,” I kept asking myself. When you break it down to pure and simple purpose it is hard to go wrong. I realized that just like the homes I was used to designing this Jewelry Store had similar purposes so I was able to run with it. The building was erected on Truxtun Ave. right next to Truxton Lake which give it a serene look and feel around dusk. Feel free to stop by the shop and experience the location.
